About Niall

Niall was born in Northern England to a family deeply rooted in the horse industry.  From a young age he displayed a great love and natural aptitude for the horse.  At age ten, his desire to become a horseman of the highest caliber became obvious and every moment since has been spent honing his skills.

Niall is the culmination of two professional equestrians.  His father Nick, a successful horse dealer and producer of international show jump horses and riders along with his mother Sharon’s unparalleled talent as a jump jockey and Cheltenham winning trainer helped to guide Niall to be the well rounded trainer and business man he is today.  His upbringing granted him exposure to many talented horses and to world class horsemen that came through the gates of the family farm to conduct business deals around the kitchen table.  Niall quickly learned that with a strong work ethic and determination he would attain his goals.

After completing school in Ireland at Dublin’s Kings Hospital, Niall’s young rider career took off under the strict direction of top professionals.  Between his father’s show jumpers and sale horses, he was riding up to 15 horses a day and campaigning top level show jumpers.  Being six feet tall, it was only inevitable that Niall would fill into his frame and become too heavy to race ride.  The time came to make a decision, either professionally train show jumpers with someone in Europe or fulfill his ambition of becoming a jockey.  Niall choose the latter, riding his first sanctioned race over jumps in Ireland at age 18, he never looked back.  From there trainer Sue Smith brought him back to Yorkshire, England where he joined her jockey ranks.  Involved in all facets of the racing yard, he worked closely with Sue and her husband the legendary horseman Harvey Smith.  It was a very exciting time to be a part of the stable; they ranked nationally in the top 5 of all trainers for 4 consecutive years.  Throughout this time Niall had 240 race rides, of those 22 were winners.

During the quiet season, Niall spent his summers working abroad in Australia and then America where he eventually met Hall of Fame trainer Janet Elliot.  This encounter once again lead to race riding
and the realization that America was where his future lay.  In 2005, Niall retired from race riding and joined fellow compatriot Michael Dickenson at his training center in North East, Maryland.  Looking to follow in Michael’s footsteps and aiming to build his training career in America, Niall made the most of his time with the legendary trainer.  Furthering his education, Niall set off to Fair Hill Training Center  and secured a position as an exercise rider for H. Graham Motion where he met his future wife Rosella.

In 2008 with the purchase of a new farm, Niall began training in his own right.  Business quickly grew, resulting in a need for more stalls and permanent training grounds.  The opportunity to purchase a barn at in 2010, these facilities are now the primary home to his racing stable.  Along training ranks, Niall sits on Fair Hill’s Board of Directors, working to ensure the success and longevity of the training center.  Niall currently trains his stable of horses between his facilities at  Fair Hill in Maryland and Palm Meadows in South Florida.
