Spring has finally arrived and so have our new friends
from Chile.  We would like to welcome Sumaya USA stable, their staff and horses to our facilities at Fair Hill.  They
have certainly peaked interest and caught the eye of
everyone on the track, training without saddles as they do in
South America.  Although their language (Spanish) and their approach to riding differ from ours, we share a commonality in our love for racing.  I have to say that the horses look quite content and their riders’ right at home here in America.  We wish them many successes here in the states and hope they enjoy their time at Fair Hill.

Star's Tizzy Fit, my last runner for the month of April finished as we started...WINNING.   We had four starters in April resulting in three winners and one third.  Tizzy really impressed me yesterday and is now two for two at Pimlico.  Going into the race she was third pick on form, with Kiaran McLaughlin's Golden Joop shipping in from NY as the 1-5 heavy favorite.  She had it all to do on form, but I liked the race for her and knew she had the class to spring an upset.  She won by four lengths under an excellent ride by X. Perez (in his first ride for me).  Congratulations to owners Family First LLC and a huge thank you to all of my grooms who have worked very hard as always to get our horses to the races at the top of their game.

Two year olds walking home after their breeze

As yesterday's winner didn't earn us a day off, we made the most of a lovely morning in Fair Hill and breezed many of the horses.  We worked some of our two year olds that aren't too far off of running (watch video here).  Tapit To Me and Julius Geezer stretched their legs and enjoyed a little blow out in preparation for their trips to New York next week.  Geezer worked a half mile in 48.4 and is all set for race 6 at Belmont on Wednesday.  All going well, we look forward to another exciting week of racing.

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS

It's the start of April and with it that day when it's deemed ok to play a prank in attempt to fool a friend, coworker, or just anyone for that matter.  Many people dread April 1st and I have to say I'm a little superstitious.  I try not to plan too much to do on this day and similar days a like.  In my stable, it's a case of getting what needs to be done and keeping my head down trying not to get pranked.  But even with all of the planning in the world, sure enough it turned into one of those days that nothing quite went to plan.  Everything I did was wrong and the day seemed it was never going to end.  Though I avoided getting pranked, nor did I buy into any suspect news.  Although…the Clancy brothers story on Animal Kingdom’s next race over hurdles was very funny and definitely got a few people... Thankfully Tuesday rolled around and the week I started with only got better.

APRIL 1st BROUGHT A WEEK OF FIRSTS

1st day of turf racing in 2013 (north of Florida).  After a long winter and a spring that had come according to the calendar, but temperatures that said otherwise.  Turf season finally kicked off at Aqueduct in New York.  After a snow storm just 2 weeks ago, most tracks canceled their first turf races.  I have to say I was more than delighted that Aqueduct stayed true to their schedule.

JULIUS GEEZER WINS AT AQUEDUCT

1st run for me as trainer.  Although we have been taking care of Geezer all winter for Amy Weaver, he has been passed on to me to continue his American career.  THANK YOU Amy for arranging this!  This was also the
1st run for the newly formed Family First LLC & Wild Card Racing Partnership who together now own Julius Geezer.  Congratulations to all involved!

Julius Geezer duly obliged and christened the new partnership by winning the starter allowance by a margin of 1
length under Eddie Castro.  Paying $4.10 in strong performance and beating a small, but strong bunch of good horses.  After starting very keen with slow fractions, Eddie did a great job containing Geezer.  Getting him to settle in 2nd, then taking it up at the top of the stretch
and going on to win nicely.
Watch the  replay here.
1st winner in New York.  Not having many runners in NY, this was my 1st winner there and after having 2nds and 3rds it was becoming as frustrating as the NYC traffic.  With some of the best trainers and horses based in NY, I was very happy to win here. Let's hope it's the first of many. To top off the day, the traffic was the best it's ever been.  I drove home through rush hour in record time…which never happens when I run poorly.

…So, I finished writing the above on Friday and didn’t have time to post it.
In the meantime, a few more firsts came along…
1st win off the claim.  Star’s Tizzy Fit won at Pimlico this past Saturday in her 3rd run off
the claim for Family First LLC.  She was given a great ride by Sheldon Russell who got her
out of the one hole and on the outside of horses before she went down the back stretch.
Now that takes talent! She then drew clear in the stretch with very little urging to win
by 3 ¼ lengths.
 Watch the race here
Job done, THANK YOU Sheldon!

1st Grand National Winner.  My employer for most of the early 2000’s, Sue and Harvey Smith won the greatest horse race in the world, The Grand National.  They have been trying for the best part of 20 years and now they have done it.  Only the people that worked on what we called "Craggy Ireland" will ever understand what a great place it is.  It’s no surprise that so many of us have gone around the world to work with the best racehorses in the world after our educations at the Smith’s.  HUGE congratulations to Sue and Harvey!

CONGRATULATIONS ANIMAL KINGDOM, TEAM VALOR & TEAM MOTION

The last Saturday of March was very exciting for Fair Hill as Animal Kingdom won the
Dubai World Cup.  It was a very impressive victory.  Congratulations to all involved!  Personally seeing him on the track every day for the past two years while training here at Fair Hill, I think I have taken for granted what a superstar he is.  He's never had a fan fair surrounding him and must be the most laid back horse to see wandering up and down to the track, so credit to Graham for managing him so well and what a training performance over the last year or so.  I think he's going to be a horse that we will all talk about for years to come.  I hope I'll get the chance to train one of his offspring one day.

Today marks our first week back at our home base in Fair Hill after a great winter away in Florida.  The horses haven't missed a beat after their long haul north and have quickly settled in to their summer quarters.  Our stable pony enjoyed a busy morning of leading breezers to and from the track (and made the most of his quarter sheet while standing in to clock.)

Julius Geezer is bright and thriving in his new home at
Fair Hill.  He bounced across the Tapita surface as he jogged
into his morning gallop.  It's a lot chillier here than 85 degree Florida and he is loving the change in the weather!

Picture
Even though last Wednesday was supposed to be the start of spring, we faced 24 degree temps this morning.  All of the horses (not sure about riders) are enjoying the fresh weather.  We hope spring is close around the corner...especially for Tapit To Me's sake, as you can see by the photo below she is more than ready to tackle the 2013 turf season! Visit our photo page to see more from this morning's works.

Today brought some excitement to the stable with a win at Gulfstream Park. Julius Geezer(IRE) galloped to a 3/4 length victory for Wild Card Racing Syndicate and trainer Amy Weaver. Geezer was on his game and ready to take on the field in his second start of the year. Imported to America in December for Wild Card Racing syndicate, English trainer Amy Weaver assigned Niall the task of conditioning her now 5 year old gelding for the Gulfstream meet. Between waiting on the AE's a half dozen times and using a few less-than-ideal races as works, Geezer's connections were finally rewarded when he came home with his nose in front. We would like to congratulate all of Geezer's investors and commend their patients and dedication! Also, a big THANK YOU to Amy Weaver for taking a chance in America and allowing us to be a part of your adventure.

We would like to extend an invitation to anyone looking to get involved in racing, please join Niall Saville Racing and be a part of this thrilling sport. We currently have a few shares remaining in two horses freshened for the 2013 season, with combined lifetime earnings of over $550,000. In 2012 alone, these two brought home purses of over $124,000; clearly not an investment to pass up! If sole ownership is what you prefer, we welcome your privately owned horses as well as offer claiming and private purchase options tailored to suite you budget and fulfill your racing needs.

To read more about Amy Weaver and Wild Card Racing's American adventure check out their story in the
York Press.

Malibu Yankee
Welcome to Niall Saville Racing and my new website.  This is still a work in progress and I shall be adding more items, pages and photos over the coming weeks and months.  Please check back often for news and reports on my runners and winners.

I currently have half of my stable based in sunny Florida at Palm Meadows Training Center, racing at Gulfstream Park. We kicked the meet off to a great start when Malibu Yankee was a close second in the valuable Tiara Fillies Claiming Crown on turf.  With that effort she earned herself a short vacation at the farm and is now building up to another run towards the end of February.

Picture
Star's Tizzy Fit
I also claimed a nice filly named Star's Tizzy Fit at the meet and I am looking forward to running her long after her good closing effort at Gulfstream this week.

Tapit To Me has gone back to my main base at Fair Hill after disappointing at Turfway Park last weekend.  She did not take to the Poly Track surface as we hoped she would.  We will aim her at the turf races back up north later in the spring.

Picture
The new stars!
As much as I am enjoying the Florida sunshine I can't wait to get back home to Fair Hill and get going with the exciting bunch of two year olds that are currently finding their feet in the snowy conditions!

In The News

My wife Rosella was featured in California Thoroughbred Magazine's November 2012 issue.  It's a great read, reflecting on her introduction into the horse industry and her everlasting dedication to ethical racing.  We are strong believers that prioritizing the horse and their owner is key!
Check out her news story on
